Just before our housesit was scheduled to end, my tax refund check showed up and saved us. Tuie found a group of tired ’30s bungalows with tiled roofs around a patchy lawn with worn canna lilies in Hollywood that were scheduled to be leveled in two months. We easily negotiated a very low rent—most people weren’t looking for temporary, unfurnished places—and I felt as if we’d moved onto a set for a ’40s noir film. Dad had just listed a small house in Oxnard for a young couple who were getting divorced and wanted to sell their furniture, so we bought their bed, refrigerator, sheets, and towels. Mom loaned us a dining table and chairs she had stored in the basement, and Janey’s husband, Larry, loaned us his big pickup truck for the move. We were glad to be set until the end of 1972.
